That's what Rise's Damon J. Gillespie has to say about the eagerly-anticipated series, which follows a group of high schoolers that find purpose and passion in the performing arts. Sure, the premise may remind viewers of other classic television shows that have followed the students in choir or drama club, but make no mistake — this show is different. Damon J. Gillespie, who plays Robbie, explains that it dares to go where others haven’t.
"We don’t like, burst into song because we need to express our emotions through song," the actor tells Teen Vogue. He says that in the series, you see the “entire truth” of life as a high schooler: money issues, family problems, and the drama that goes down off-stage.
Damon plays the high school quarterback who enters theater and finds not only a passion, but an internal conflict. It’s something that Damon himself knows quite a bit about. He also came from a musical theater background, and actually starred in an IRL production of Spring Awakening (the same show the characters are in on Rise) all while being involved with football and other interests.
