Ezra F. Vogel, author of a new biography of Deng Xiaoping, retired from Harvard University in 2000, but still lives just a few hundred yards from the campus. I started in 2000. I thought it’d take five years. To upgrade my spoken Chinese to interview high officials, I got a tutor and worked with a tutor for a year.
After a year, I decided to take a detour and work on Chen Yun (one of China’s senior leaders alongside Deng and one of the leaders who often challenged Deng’s policies). He was the other person in power. I wanted to get perspective on how the other person thought. I spent almost a year on Chen Yun.
