Mulak lost the October 15 Assembly election from Kamptee seat in Nagpur rural by a margin of 40,000 votes to BJP’s sitting MLA Chandrashekhar Bawankule who got 1,26,755. But he managed to secure 86,753 votes, highest by any among his fellow Congress candidates in Vidarbha. Sunil Kedar was the sole face-saver for the Congress in Nagpur district winning from Saoner seat, the lone victory in 12 seats of the district. But strangely Mulak scored even more than Kedar who mustered 84,630 votes. Mulak also occupies fourth spot among Congress bigwigs in Maharashtra in terms of votes polled by them – Harshwardhan Patil (Indapur) 94,227, Satej Patil (Kolhapur-South) 96,961 and PN Patil (Karvir), who polled 1,60,288 votes.
