He has played clarinet with various Italian and foreign orchestras, both as a member of the orchestra and as soloist, including the Guido D’Arezzo, Orchestra RAI of Turin and Naples (Italy), Orchestra Sinfonica di Perugia e dell’Umbria, Nis Simphony Orchestra (Serbia), Stettino Orchestra (Poland), Arturo Toscanini Orchestra and Queen’s College Orchestra (USA), Symphonic Orchestra of Constanta (Romania).     Composer Alexandre Eisenberg is a native of Rio de Janeiro, and studied composition there and in the United States at Indiana University. His works have been featured at the biannual festivals of contemporary music in Rio de Janeiro, and performed throughout Brazil, the US, Italy, Spain, France, Germany and China. He is presently professor of music at the Federal University of Santa Maria (Rio Grande do Sul). We talked via Google Talk in March and April of 2009.

    TM: I always find it interesting and illuminating to explore the influences of family and friends during childhood. Please tell me about the musical environment in your family. Where were your parents from?

    AE: Both my parents were born in Rio. And all my grandparents were European. So I am second generation Brazilian.

    TM: Is your family Jewish?

    AE: Yes.

    TM: On all sides, I imagine.

    AE: Yes, on all sides.

    TM: Was there someone in the family who was a professional musician?

    AE: My maternal grandmother always referred to a “cousin” called Boris, who was a nice pianist. But that’s all. My paternal grandfather was a cantor for a while in Buenos Aires, before he came to Brazil.
